Appliance Size & Measurement Guide
We want the appliance you buy to fit your home the first time. Returning an appliance because it does not fit is frustrating and costly, so please use this guide to measure carefully before you buy or schedule delivery.
1. How to Measure Your Space
Measure the cutout space: measure side to side at the top, middle and bottom, and use the smallest number. Measure the height from the floor to the bottom of any overhead cabinets or countertops, at the front and the back. Measure the depth from the back wall to the front edge of your counters or cabinets.
Measure the delivery path: measure the width and height of every doorway, hallway and staircase the appliance must pass through, from the street to its final location. Include tight corners and account for doorknobs and handrails.
2. Refrigerators
Typical dimensions: standard-depth models are about 30–34 inches deep and stick out past standard counters; counter-depth models are about 24–28 inches deep. Widths range from 24 inches (compact) to 36 inches (standard family size), with built-in models up to 48 inches.
Clearance: allow ½ to 1 inch on the top, back and sides for airflow. Make sure the doors can open at least 90 degrees, and allow at least 2.5 inches between the hinge side of the door and a wall.
3. Washers and Dryers
Typical dimensions: about 27 inches wide (29 inches for large capacity), 30–34 inches deep, and 38–43 inches tall for front-load or 42–44 inches for top-load models.
Clearance: allow 4–6 inches behind the units for hoses and the dryer vent, 1 inch on the sides and between units, and at least 48 inches in front for doors and loading. Top-load washers need at least 20 inches above the machine to open the lid.
4. Ranges and Stoves
Typical dimensions: freestanding ranges are usually 30 inches wide (36 or 48 inches for pro-style, 20 or 24 inches for compact), 25–27 inches deep excluding handles, and 36 inches to the cooktop, or 46–48 inches including the backguard.
Clearance: every freestanding range needs an anti-tip bracket installed where the floor meets the wall. Keep at least 30 inches between the cooking surface and the bottom of an unprotected wood or metal cabinet above it.
